From New York to Home
A mixed media interactive artwork, serves as a visual narrative, inviting contemplation on theprofound irony within our perceptions of value and the blurred lines that exist betweenhumanity and objects in our world.
In From New York to Home, Yeri Jun, a Korean living in America, intricately navigates theprofound irony of our world. Employing an acrylic departure board as her medium, Junskillfully examines the juxtaposition between the real-time cost of her living journey and thestatic price associated with her passing.
This thought-provoking artwork challenges societalnorms that often oversimplify value by equating it solely with high prices, prompting viewersto reevaluate the true essence of life. The fluctuating plane ticket prices, unveiled throughthe artwork, carry nuanced messages that breathe life into Jun’s narrative. With fast-spinningflaps, Jun hopes to subtly indoctrinate her audience with a sense of magic and intrigue.

The idea started with a simple question.
Living in New York, I asked myself how I could go back home when I died.
(The idea notes and sketch)

The answer to this question is that if I die, I will be carried back to my home in a cargo hold, and the cost was much more than when I was alive. At this time, I felt the confusion between value and price, what the difference between humans and objects was. So I decided to visualize it.

And I hid a secret message while the flap was spinning. In the hope that this spell would lead to brainwashing magic in the audience. Because it’s a spell that made me live.
‘’What can we do? We must go on living
We will go on living
We’ll live through a long course of days and endless evenings;
Beyond the grave, we shall say that we have suffered, that we wept, we shall say that it was bitter for us, and God will take pity on us , and you and I Uncle, dearest Uncle, will see a bright, a beautiful, a shining life . We will rejoice, and we will look back on our present unhappiness with emotion and with a smile, and we will find peace.
I believe it Uncle, I believe it deeply, passionately...
We will find peace!’’
